Mindfulness & Breathing

Short practices — breathing, grounding, mindful attention — that bring you back to the present moment.

Understanding it

What this means

Mindfulness means paying attention to the present moment on purpose, without judging it. It is a skill, practised in minutes, not a belief system.

The NHS recommends mindfulness as part of self-help for stress and low mood. It does not remove difficult feelings; it changes your relationship with them, so they pass through rather than take over.

Breathing is the fastest available lever. A slow out-breath activates the body's calming system within a minute or two — which is why it appears in almost every coping toolkit on this site.

Common signs

  • Living in your head, replaying or rehearsing
  • Arriving somewhere with no memory of the journey
  • Reacting instantly and regretting it later
  • Never feeling fully rested even when resting

This page is educational and is not a diagnosis. If these experiences last for weeks or affect daily life, speaking with a professional is a good next step.

Things you can try today

01

4-6 breathing

In through the nose for 4, out through the mouth for 6, for two minutes. If counting is hard, just make the out-breath longer than the in-breath.

02

Box breathing

In for 4, hold 4, out for 4, hold 4. Useful before something stressful, like an exam or a difficult conversation.

03

5-4-3-2-1 grounding

Five things you see, four you feel, three you hear, two you smell, one you taste. Anchors you when emotion spikes.

04

Three-minute breathing space

Minute one: notice what is here. Minute two: follow the breath. Minute three: widen attention to the whole body. A complete practice in three minutes.

05

Mindful ordinary tasks

Wash dishes, walk, or drink tea with full attention on the sensations. No extra time required.

Self-care tips

  • Practise briefly and often rather than rarely and long
  • Expect a wandering mind — returning is the practice
  • Try it before you need it, not only in crisis
  • Pair it with an existing habit so you remember
